Experience the Historic Tellico Plains Inn – A Timeless Hotel in the Heart of Tennessee
For over a century, this Tellico Plains hotel has welcomed workers, residents, and travelers seeking comfort in the stunning foothills of the Cherokee National Forest. Originally constructed in 1916 by the Babcock brothers to honor their mother, Harriet Vose Babcock, it was first known as Mother’s Home before later becoming the Babcock Hotel. Built as a home for employees of the Babcock Lumber Co., this historic hotel in Tellico Plains has stood the test of time, leaving an unforgettable mark on all who visit.
In 1927, G.W. (Pop) and Paulina Munz, German immigrants, purchased the property and renamed it the Munz Hotel. “Pop” Munz became known for his hearty, home-cooked meals, prepared on a large cast-iron stove for the hotel’s many guests. Even after his passing in 1948, the Munz family continued operating the Tellico Plains hotel until 1975, when Fred and Sina Cole took ownership. The hotel remained in operation until the early 2000s, serving as a cherished landmark in the community.
A New Era for a Historic Tellico Plains Hotel
Fast forward to 2022, when East Tennessee native John Pollard discovered “The Old Hotel” for sale. Recognizing the significance of Tellico Plains and its breathtaking location along the Cherohala Skyway, John partnered with his best friend, John Stewart, to restore this beloved landmark. With deep family roots in Tellico Plains, John knew that visitors would continue to seek the small-town charm, rich history, and natural beauty that have made this area special for generations.
In May 2022, John and Jennifer Pollard, along with John and Elizabeth Stewart, officially purchased the Tellico Plains hotel. Renovation began in September of that year, transforming the 1916 building into a modern yet historically preserved Inn in Tellico Plains. One of the biggest challenges was updating the original layout—at the time of purchase, the hotel had 12 bedrooms but only two functioning bathrooms! Careful planning ensured that modern conveniences could be added while maintaining the character of the past.
Welcome to the Tellico Plains Inn
By September 2023, the renovations were complete, and the Tellico Plains Inn was ready to welcome guests once again. Locally owned and operated by John Pollard and his aunt, Sherryl Byrum, the Inn now features:
- Eight beautifully restored guest rooms (reduced from 12 to allow for private bathrooms).
- A charming lobby, filled with vintage photographs and local memorabilia.
- A 650 sq. ft. event space, perfect for parties and social gatherings.
- An extended wrap-around porch, ideal for relaxing in a rocking chair and taking in the beauty of Tellico Plains.
The Tellico Plains Inn is more than just a hotel—it’s a living piece of history, where past and present come together to create an unforgettable stay. We are grateful to all who have visited and continue to keep the spirit of this historic Tellico Plains hotel alive.
